Techabout.com is one of my first projects I started early this year. The first blog (plasmatv) has been established on March 1,2006.

There are 4 blogs and 1 page that generate revenue.

The traffic is steady. The site can produce revenue with no work for many months.

AdSense Placement on Homepage

How important is the placement of AdSense on the front page? The welcome page, the intro, the first impression? Is it worth it, to potentially lose a customer/visitor to an advertisement or worst a competitor? Is it worth it to give your visitor the impression that you have the intent of making money off of them? While some visitors might not actually think this, in the world that we live in, the first impressions often makes the biggest impact.

I been pondering this for a while, since using AdSense. Is the potential earnings, worth the lost of a potential visitor?

Two weeks ago, I put a few ad units on the front page of one of my web sites. After a full day of running the ad units I checked the stats, and notice that the earnings covered 1/2 to 2/3 of what that web site usually makes on a daily basis! I've never put any ads on the front page before, but this was astonishing to see! Even more amazing is the fact that the earnings and CTR for my overall account has doubled, while the ads on the front page continues to maintained it's consistency. Taking stats from my channels, I was able to see that the CTR for the ads on the home page was 5 times that of the ads being displayed by the rest of the site.

Of course this could be base on the type of web site and the placement however I have tested this out on another web site. While it did not yield the same results, the CTR was fairly high as well. Again this depends on the the type and placement.

Now, the question is the lost of visitors. Do the visitors come back or press the back button after seeing the advertisement? I have no idea and don't think there is a way to find out. However, checking your traffic stats might yield some answers. If you know how to look and compare your stats, you could probably find the answers. My findings reported that I either lost a tiny bit, or none at all. When I compare the pageviews-to-unique, to other days before placing the ad units on the home page, compared with now they are pretty much even. Which means I'm not losing any visitors.

All in all, in my experience placing ads on the home page, can bring in a lot more than what other pages within your web site can make. It's all an experiment right now and I believe any one who wants to try to optimize and place ads on their home page should do so.

BigDaddy news

Bigdaddy status update: almost there

We’re down to just 1-2 data centers left in the switchover to Bigdaddy. It’s possible that the Bigdaddy switchover will be complete in the next week or two. Just as a reminder, Bigdaddy is a software upgrade to Google’s infrastructure that provides the framework for a lot of improvements to core search quality in the coming months (smarter redirect handling, improved canonicalization, etc.). A team of dedicated people has worked very hard on this change; props to them for the code, sweat, and hours they’ve put into it.

Gone Supplemental

Some site owners over at WebmasterWorld have been discussing an issue where on Bigdaddy data centers, the site wouldn’t be crawled as much in the main index. That would result in Google showing more pages from the supplemental results for that site. GoogleGuy requested feedback with concrete details, and several people responded with enough details that we identified and changed a threshold in Bigdaddy to crawl more pages from those sites.

I checked in that email queue tonight to see how the “gonesupplemental” feedback looked. I looked at an emergency responder site, a truck site, a ticket site, a karate site, a silver site, a T-shirt site, a site about memory, a site selling a type of document, a boating site, and a jewelry site. All were getting more pages crawled, and I expect over time that we’ll crawl more pages from these sites and similar sites that people mentioned. The biggest site that I saw had 711K pages reported, and I saw other sites with 40,400 estimated pages and 52,700estimated pages for a site: search.

So the upshot is that if you’re one of these people who was paying attention to this issue, I think it has already improved quite a bit, and I would expect to see more pages indexed in the coming week or two. Some sites may see improvements earlier than others because of where a site happens to be in Google’s crawl cycle.

Number of channels increased on YPN

Yahoo! Publisher Network made some changes last night during their Friday night maintenance downtime.

First, the number of channels has been increased from 50 to 100 for each of the reporting URLs and reporting categories.

They have also made it possible to remove ad style palettes as well as rename them. This will be great, as I will finally be able to remove one of the two channels I inadvertantly named JenSense back before YPN was in public beta.

There are also some cosmetic changes that avid YPN stat checkers should notice immediately.

As you might imagine, good search engine optimization (SEO) techniques are extremely important for the single-page site. The page must target a specific keyword, ideally as narrow a niche as you can make it. Make sure you do all the standard SEO tricks:

* keyword in domain
* keyword in title
* keyword in heading
* keyword in bold
* keyword used near the top and bottom of the page

Check the keyword density of the page (important: do this before you place any ads on it) and make sure the focus is on the right keyword.

Getting the keyword in the domain name may be hard. You may find it simpler to use a subdomain associated with a domain you already own, since then you can name the subdomain whatever you want.

Firefox made $72M last year

The best piece of information I got out of BarCampLA was that Firefox, which is produced by the for-profit Mozilla Corporation, made $72M last year and is on target to have 120 employees this year. I have no idea if this is true (anyone?), but it makes sense. I mean, there have to be 72M people using Firefox out there, and making $1 a year seems low to me! Mark Pincus brought this topic up recently.

Mozilla Corporation makes all that money because of the Google Search box on the top right. If you search with that box (which I do all day long) and you click on the Google ads on the results page Firefox gets ~80% of that. They also have Amazon in the search box, and other services that I'm sure kick them back some affiliate fees.

Buying text links

I've recently considered buying some links to my web site and have some thoughts on what the best approach is. I'll outline them here briefly and would be interested in hearing what you all think about these assumptions/guidelines.

1) Buying from a link broker is fine, but it is important to be aware of several things, including:

a) Link brokers are, ultimately, interested in selling as many links as possible - listen to what they have to say about what works, but take it with a grain of salt as well.

b) When PR increases, they'll likely be quick to point out the "new higher rates" for your links...but when PR falls, it's unlikely that you'll be contacted about your decreased monthly rates. You have to watch this for yourself.

c) They'll have plenty of links that are in unrelated categories or just on questionable sites. Choose how much you want to "walk the line" with linking. If you want a blast of links to quickly get to the top of the rankings in MSN and Yahoo!, you may have to buy on questionable sites. If you want to be more careful or "whitehat", choose relevance and be patient in waiting for the right opportunities.

2) Buy links on relevant sites - this conflicts with the options I've listed above, but in my case, I wish to only buy links that are from relevant sites with legitimate content. If the site appears to be fodder only for eyeballs and adsense clicks, I'll avoid it. But if it's related, or in an ancillary area of service (mine is a service business), I'll go with it. "Related" is grey area sometimes, but I have decided always to err on the side of caution.

3) Watch the IPs where the links are coming from. If you can't easily access a list of the IPs, it may be best to avoid that broker. You should at least be able to see IPs after you've signed up for an account and all links should be on different "Class C" IPs (e.g. - aaa.bbb.CCC.ddd).

4) Don't view a link from a PR 8-10 site as a magic tool to vault you to the top of the rankings. It likely won't happen, though in the long run it should have beneficial effects on your PR (in Google) and, more importantly, rankings and traffic.

5) Mix up your anchor text, using multiple phrases or words that are relevant and for which you'd like to rank well. Blasting many links using one set of anchor text may get you to the top in Yahoo! or MSN in the short run, and maybe even Google, but Google will likely "dislike" this as it doesn't appear to be "natural" linking. The current index update should be evidence enough of the strange things that can happen with the mother of all search engines.

6) Try to buy links that will actually deliver traffic by themselves. This may seem elementary, but with the clamor about buying links merely to increase PR or gain top 10 rankings, what is often overlooked is the traffic that can actually be delivered from links on relevant, high-traffic pages.

Searching the web for a problem I face on a greek site about encoding, I found a very useful PHP class which changes the charset of a variable.

First of you all you have to download the class from here:

Secondly, unzip the file and upload to your /www/ folder the ConvertTables dir and the ConvertCharset.class.php .

Open your php script you want to change the encoding.
Add to the line #1 the next code:

Kanoodle Pays for Cookie Distribution

In a twist on the ad network concept, Kanoodle has launched a program that will pay publishers to distribute Kanoodle's targeting cookies, whether they show Kanoodle ads on their site or not.

The BrightAds Cookies program aims to increase the relevance of the company's behaviorally targeted ads. By increasing the data it collects on viewers of its ads that visit publishers outside its own network, Kanoodle can target more relevant ads to those users when they visit a site that serves Kanoodle's BehaviorTarget ads.

"By distributing more cookies across our network, Kanoodle is better able to fulfill the promise of behavior targeting -- offering advertisers highly-targeted leads and serving the most relevant ads to consumers," said Doug Perlson, chief operating officer of Kanoodle.

When someone visits a site in Kanoodle's network, they download a cookie that assigns them to a behavioral segment based on that site's content. Behavioral segments match up with Kanoodle's 7,500 contextual ad categories

When that same user subsequently visits a site that serves Kanoodle's BehaviorTarget ads, Kanoodle can target ads to that user based on their past Web behavior, using the anonymous user profile stored in the cookie.

Publishers in the program will be paid five percent of the revenue earned when an ad served in Kanoodle's BehaviorTarget network is triggered by the cookie from that publisher's site. If more than one BehaviorTarget cookie is present, the most recent one is given precedence.

Kanoodle expects the program to be particularly attractive to small niche publishers with a targeted audience but limited pageviews, Perlson said. Since publishers do not have to serve Kanoodle's ads to participate, he also expects the program to appeal to sites with existing ad serving relationships, or to e-commerce sites that are wary of showing ads on their site that might distract users from completing a sale.

BrightAds Cookies uses controversial third-party cookies, which face a larger risk of deletion by users and anti-spyware vendors, according to analysts. The cookies Kanoodle uses expire after 30 days and are not used to collect any personally-identifiable information.

"Cookies are crucial to the success of Internet advertising. In general, there's nothing wrong with cookies," Perlson said. "Cookies have been, and will continue to be, an important factor in the availability of free, quality content on the Internet."

The company had explored a partnership with 24/7 Real Media in May 2004 to use its Insight XE analytics platform for behavioral targeting, but never launched a product using that technology, Perlson said.

PageRank … Yes, it Does Still Matter!

It’s amazing how many people speak with such authority about how PageRank is now meangingless. PageRank - the little green bar score that Google gives to sites which, in a nutshell, is a measure of how “important” a page is based on which pages are linking to it - is still a very valuable indicator for SEO and link building. I’m not going to go into the detailed original definition of PageRank and how it works but if you don’t know the original basics, it’s an absolute must read.

Now, why are so many (seemingly SEO literate) people adamant that PageRank is now a worthless indicator of the strength of a page? Because with so many people becoming educated about the meaning of PageRank, and the general hierarchical voting system of links between pages on the internet, all the major search engines have had to counter the PageRank manipulators. And it’s no surprise that Google is leading the way.

What we have today is Google working very hard to identify and discount links that it deems less credible. Noone knows for sure exactly how it does this, but there are several good theories out there. I don’t claim to be the genious that has developed any of these theories .. they’re all out there on all the popular boards, but finding them through the dense postings of absolute crap can be a challenege.

To help filter out so-called “curiosity clicks” that typically do not lead to conversions on the merchants’ side, we updated the eMiniMalls units to drive qualified clicks. Hence, eMiniMalls users will notice a dip in the overall click through rate (and hence the overall revenue).

While we do strongly believe that in the long run everyone will benefit from our efforts to optimize this eMiniMalls (beta) service, we do recognize that in the short term this might lead to potential drops in revenue for some of our publishers. Google Gives Web Analytics Away for Free

In a move likely to thrill many marketers but horrify Web analytics firms, Google is expected to release the new version of its Urchin analytics service today. The release, re-branded Google Analytics, will be free to advertisers in its AdWords program.

Google had previously charged $199 per month for the hosted service. The search player acquired Urchin back in March.

"Part of Google's philosophy in the advertising area is to provide our advertisers with the tools they need to be successful," Paul Muret, an engineering director at Google and one of Urchin's founders, told ClickZ News. "We want to give them the visibility they need to get the intelligence they need to make good decisions on advertising."

Google Analytics, which will be rolled out to current Urchin customers and AdWords users Monday, will be available in 16 languages. The company has added "dashboard" screens customized to ease access to common reports for different types of users: Webmasters, marketers and executives. In a move likely to attract even more people to sign up for AdWords accounts, Web site analytics will be free to AdWords advertisers. Google won't require a minimum spend from users.

The software is integrated into the AdWords service in several ways. Users will be able to access both Web site and AdWords analytics through a single interface. Additionally, Google Analytics enables automatic tagging of each keyword in a marketer's portfolio so it can be easily tracked within the application. The automatic importation of keyword pricing data is also supported, enabling users to track ROI. Marketers may also use the application to track initiatives in other channels: e-mail, banner ads, etc.

JupiterResearch analyst Eric Peterson expects the release to have major repercussions for competitors in the Web analytics space. "When Google acquired Urchin," he said, "I speculated that the greatest good that Google could do with the application, which would also be the greatest bad for the Web analytics market, at least part of the analytics market, would be to give it away for free. I think it impacts everybody."

Though the company will incur costs associated with providing the service for free, Google believes providing the information will benefit AdWords in the long term.

"We want the ROI for advertisers to be real," said Muret. "Their long term sustainable advertising health is good for Google."

Conventional wisdom says analytics applications are underutilized for several reasons: cost, information overload and the difficulty of determining what to do with the data. A free Google Analytics addresses the first issue, and the company also hopes to take on the latter two. The firm has developed an extensive help center, including a section that explains key analytics concepts. To help its larger advertisers, Google has trained sales reps and will provide those salespeople with a support team of analytics experts. Additionally, it has reached out to consultancies to form a new service partner program, so they can help AdWords clients.

Peterson believes the offering will entice many businesses to adopt analytics for the first time. "Urchin was good when Google bought them, and now it's a little more complete package. All you have to do is ask for an account and put some JavaScript on your Web pages," he said. "I think it'll push more people along and really increase the interest in Web analytics."

Six AdSense optimization tips for forums

1. Format is important for multiple ad units
Placing a skyscraper above the fold on the left side of your forum seems to produce slightly better performance than other positioning. However, when using multiple ad units throughout the page our horizontal bias still favors the leaderboard. See the Forum Heat Map below for more details.

2. Display your ad units where repeat users will notice them
A leaderboard at the very top fits nicely next to the logo, but forum regulars tend to skip the header and go straight to the meat of the thread. Placing your ad unit above or below the first post can be more effective.

3. Place a leaderboard immediately after the last post
This provides users who make it to the end of a thread with a ‘next step’ when the content ends. If you place it after the footer, though, folks will move to the next thread before they even see the ad!

4. Use horizontal link units
Link units offer a wider range of relevant topics for users to browse. A horizontal unit can be placed near the top of your forum just below the header.

5. Opt-in to image ads
Supporting image ads increases the pool of ads –particularly cost-per-thousand-impression (CPM) ads – bidding to display on your site. Since forums tend to have lower click-through rates (CTRs) than other types of sites, CPM ads can improve revenue without the need for clicks. Please remember, however, that CPM ads come in both text and image formats.

6. Be sensitive to your forum community
Forums are highly interactive, so be sensitive to your users when implementing your AdSense ads. Be sure to blend the ads nicely, so they don’t appear overly intrusive – but don’t blend them so well they mislead your users! Every forum site is different and you know your community best, so as always use your own judgment to create the most positive experience for your users.

Yahoo Publisher Network has added a brand new ad category targeting feature for publishers, which should help create tighter ad targeting.

In addition to the contextually-matched ads that Yahoo! serves, Ad Targeting enables you to target your visitors with ads based on their specific interests. You can choose up to two ad categories to apply to your web site (e.g., http://pets.yahoo.com), a specific directory of your web site (e.g., http://pets.yahoo.com/dogs/) or a content-specific web page on your site (e.g., http://pets.yahoo.com/dogs/toys.html). Your ad category selections, in combination with our matching technology, will determine what types of ads will be displayed. Selecting ad categories for a Targeted URL, however, does not guarantee that only ads from those ad categories will appear.

Speaking to AdSense publishers at face-to-face events and in reading emails and forums, we on the AdSense team have seen a phenomenon develop that's probably best described as G.A.S.S. - Google AdSense Stats Syndrome. The primary sign of affliction is the compulsive need to check AdSense stats every 15 minutes or so to see how much you've earned since your prior login. Sufferers face strong withdrawal when separated from a PC with Internet access and have been known to experience mild abdominal discomfort and general irritability.

So for you G.A.S.S. sufferers, we will offer a bit of temporary summer relief this Thursday. For some scheduled maintenance, our reports will not be (visibly) updated for around 6 hours beginning at 12 noon PST (GMT -8 for you international folks). Your earnings will of course be unaffected, but you won't see any change in stats during this time as we work to improve the AdSense system.

PayPal Introduces New Micropayments Pricing to Increase the Convenience of Purchasing Digital Goods

SAN JOSE, Calif., Aug. 31, 2005 - PayPal, the global online payment service, today announced new micropayments processing fees for digital goods. The new pricing will provide merchants with a more affordable way to process payments for low-cost digital content such as video games, online greeting cards, news articles, mobile phone content and digital music. PayPal's micropayments pricing is designed to give customers the convenience of a-la-carte purchases, such as 99-cent downloadable ringtones, without having to sign up for annual subscriptions or pre-funded payment accounts.

An extension of PayPal's existing payment service for digital music providers, PayPal's new micropayments pricing is designed especially for payments less than $2. The new fees will enable merchants to process payments at a rate of 5 percent plus 5 cents per transaction. Because of the reduced fixed fee, merchants can save 40 to 60 percent when processing low-cost payments, compared to the industry's current payment processing rates of approximately 2 percent plus 20 to 30 cents per transaction.

"The consumer response to a-la-carte pricing for music downloads has clearly shown that customers want to be able to pay as they go," said Peter Ashley, director of PayPal's micropayments business. "With our new pricing tier for digital goods, merchants can affordably provide customers with what they are demanding - the opportunity to purchase the content they want without the need to sign up for subscriptions or pre-payments."

PayPal's new fees enhance the convenience of downloadable digital content. Customers can buy as many or as few items as they choose using any funding method - including credit cards, bank accounts and stored PayPal balances.

PayPal's new micropayments pricing will complement PayPal's standard, volume-based transaction fees, which range from 1.9 to 2.9 percent, plus 30 cents per transaction. Digital content merchants can choose to process transactions at their current PayPal rate or the new micropayments rate, based on whichever is more favorable to their businesses.

This tool does what it says, it predicts your future Google PageRank.

How to use this tool

1. Enter the exact website address of the page you want to check the prediction for into the text box. (eg. www.iwebtool.com/tools)

You can enter up to 10 different websites to check the prediction for. After entering the first address, press Enter and enter a new address on the new line.

2. Click the "Check!" button
